Hello,

I decided to let you in on a secret. I have never written a blog post before. I fancy myself as someone who has a lot to say. I am thoughtful and silly, sometimes humorous, and more often than not, I am opinionated on a various number of topics. Those who know me personally can attest to that. So I see so many others typing away posting and blogging especially when it was popular years ago. I have wanted a platform for some time and what I am now getting it that it does not matter how ill prepared I think I am. What I draw upon is my own wisdom and that is already inside of me. What I know is what I know. So let me introduce myself. My name is Rikkia J. I am 44! I am a single mother of three amazing humans as may of you know. I have one middle schooler and two amazing college students. I often say I am a mother who has raised dragon Tamers in a time of dragons! I say this because I believe I have raised my children with the love and fortitude that raised me. I was raised by two poets who fell in love on a college campus. They didn’t last as lovers but their love lasted and they were lifelong friends… But back to motherhood and raising my babies. I have always raised them to face life circumstances with boldness. We may not have always had everything we needed but guess what we will find a way and that is the strength and fortitude I see them using now. They are my wildest dreams! I truly mean it. And its all just beginning. Life is so wonderful to be able to bud and blossom the way it has.

But here I am, a therapist that is. My other title. I am an Expressive Arts Therapist and Mental Health Counselor. Now what does all that mean? Well, for me it means I am a good listener and follower. I lead and I follow while working with my clients. Each person is unique so I cannot truly tell you what a singular session with me would be like but, I can tell you I do my best to make genuine connections and pair that with the skills I have learned through my years of practice.

Ever wonder why it’s called a “practice” I hear myself constantly say to clients “it’s a practice, not a perfect” What if it were a “perfect” I don’t think that would work. Is there a perfect “fit” for anyone? In session the other day I referenced my experience as an actor/ director in theater. have you ever been in a play or performance of some sort? Now of course you have to practice, rehearse, draw out staging, add lighting, costume, wardrobe, the whole shebang. But the magic, that is not planned. Please leave rooom for the MAGIC! That special ingredient. Now I think it is important to note, some magic comes with time, and wisdom. But I really think through time we learn to wait, we learn not to rush the process, we learn to listen more than we speak and those are the lessons that get mixed in the tincture to create the potion that creates the vavoooom!!!!

So back to dragons and slaying or taming whatever you may. Showing up is most mportant. Each day make sure you show up and meet God and leave room for the magic!
